From the Corner Office
The
Value Proposition
Dear
Fellow SCAFP Associates,
Your
Board wants to thank you for renewing your membership. Attendance at our
monthly meetings continues to grow, allowing us to draw informative speakers
in to our sessions. We want to thank all of you who support your association
not only with your dues, but with your attendance at our monthly meetings and
special functions.
Your
membership in SCAFP provides you with many benefits. We continue to have
excellent topics and speakers at our monthly meetings which can provide CTP
renewal credits for you. Our two day EXPO LA is the best and biggest low cost
educational program on the West Coast! This year's event is almost here
- May
10-11 at the Pasadena Convention Center. Our program committee has been
working very hard to put together a great program for you and I think you're
really going to enjoy and benefit from it. Check below for more details on
our highlighted speakers over the two day venue.
We
recently sponsored a tour of the Federal Reserve Bank of Los Angeles on March
21st. Because we were over subscribed for this tour, we are in the process of
scheduling another tour for the September time frame (more to come) and will
continue to provide these additional types of educational opportunities for
you.
We
have a tour of the Regulus Lockbox facility (downtown Los Angeles) scheduled
for June 19th at 9:00 a.m. Be sure to sign up early through the Association
Office (818) 843-5660, email:
scafp@emaoffice.com or via the registration form on our website:
http://www.scafp.net/. For those of you who have never seen a Lockbox
operation, we encourage you to take this opportunity to visit the Regulus
facility. Even if you have visited a Lockbox operation years before, we
suggest that you sign up for this tour as technology has changed Lockbox
processing. Regulus has an impressive operation with state of the art
equipment.
Many
opportunities to serve on the Board of your Association exist. From the
Education Committee to the Programs Committee to the Major Events Committee to
Officer and Director Roles - you can help shape the Association and guide us
as the Treasury landscape continues to change and grow. Serving on the Board
is a wonderful and satisfying experience and affords you the opportunity of
developing personal friendships and networking with other Treasury
professionals. It is truly a very rewarding experience. For more
information, just talk to a board member or let the Association Office know
you are interested.
In my
mind, the most valuable part of being a member of the SCAFP is the networking
opportunities. Meet other Treasury professionals, gather pearls of knowledge,
establish new friendships and enhance your professional career - that's what
the SCAFP is all about!
PARTICIPATE - DON'T VEGITATE!! Get the most out of your Association.
All
the Best,
Dick

Special Thanks to our 2007 Platinum Sponsors

Join us at
the Pasadena
Convention Center
to hear from the following scintillating speakers:
- On Thursday, our
keynote luncheon speaker will be Libby Evans Wright. As the 2006
Pasadena Tournament of Roses President, we are privileged to be able to hear
first hand about the Tournament of Roses and everything that goes into making
this day America's
New Year's Celebration. As a festival of flowers, music and sports unequaled
anywhere in the world, it is a salute to the community spirit and love of
pageantry that have thrived in Pasadena for more than a century.
-
On Friday, our keynote luncheon speaker is Oscar and 16-time Emmy Award-winning
producer, Arnold Shapiro, who will provide us with an inspiring, original, and
humorous approach to success with his multi-media presentation, "Producing An
Oscar-Winning Career...Without Having To Win An Oscar!" From Arnold's
middle-class Los Angeles upbringing with no special talents and no Hollywood
connections to a successful career beyond his wildest dreams led him to ask:
"Why me?" His answer contains his "ingredients of success" that are applicable
to every career. From four decades of producing programs such as "Scared
Straight!" "Rescue 911" and "Big Brother," Arnold will offer both motivation and
applicable success strategies.
- Other highlighted
speakers include
o
Keitaro Matsuda
has been managing the Economic Research Department of Union Bank of California (UBOC)
since 1997. As the bank's most senior economist, Matsuda advises the Bank's
management, employees and clients on issues related to the Bank's West Coast
market and the Asian economies and will be speaking to us about California's
Economy in the opening session on Thursday.
o
Diane Ellis, Associate
Director, Division of Insurance and Research for the Federal Deposit Insurance
Corporation will be presenting an overview of the FDIC's Deposit Insurance
Assessment System on Thursday afternoon. |

Federal
Reserve Tour
SCAFP members enjoyed
the tour of the Los Angeles branch of the 12th Federal Reserve
District Bank on March 21st. The members viewed many different areas of the
Fed including the check processing operations area, the coin and currency
vaults, the loading dock where armored carriers deliver deposits and funds
undergo preliminary counting. All were amazed at the cash vault, which is
the size of a football field and contains floor to ceiling shelving full of
boxes of currency. The fully automated robotic machines that pull and store
cases of cash in and out of the racks were incredible pieces of machinery. A
single box of $100 bills, for example, contains $40 million, so you can
imagine how much money is stored in the vault!
After
viewing the processing areas, the unique money museum, and the lobby exhibit,
"Fed Gallery: Your Central Bank in Focus" were the next stops in the tour.
There, members saw antique equipment, purchased the new California quarters
and the Lewis & Clark nickels, and worked with simulations of the U.S.
economy.
Thanks to Lakshmi Kumar, CTP,
SCAFP's Education Chair, for arranging this tour. Due to the overwhelming
response for this tour, Lakshmi has made arrangements for another Fed tour on
Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at 1pm for those members who were unable to
attend this tour. Look for registration details in the near future.

New Member
Profile:
Meet Ms. Leila Guieb
Leila has been
employed by Hilton Hotels Corporation in Beverly Hills for the past six
years, five of which have been spent in Treasury. As a Treasury Analyst,
she performs the daily cash functions of the company and all of its joint
ventures, and she also develops the daily cash report to advise management
of the current status.
Leila decided to join
SCAFP at the recommendation of her colleague who is also a SCAFP member,
Louise Cummings. She had accompanied Louise to several of the SCAFP
meetings as a guest, and found the topics to be interesting as well as
relevant and helpful in her work. Leila especially enjoyed our recent
speaker, Michele Allman-Ward who she found to be an excellent speaker that
was very knowledgeable and had great presentation skills!
Leila grew up in Los
Angeles County and graduated from USC. She enjoys outdoor sports such as
snowboarding and hiking in her free time.
Meet
Ms. Karen Herrell, CTP
From an early career
start as a kindergarten teacher to a stay-at-home mom, Bookkeeper and
Billing Manager, Karen has worked her way up the ladder to become the
Director of Treasury and Administration at Pallädeo, a company that is
involved in Design, General Contracting, Décor and Fixture Manufacturing,
and Brand Communication for retail establishments. Over the 17 years that
Karen has been with Pallädeo, she has watched the company grow and change
along with her responsibilities. She's had many different experiences
from creating and developing both an IT Department and an HR Program to
roles as the Controller and Treasury Manager; Karen brings a wealth of
knowledge and experience to our group. In addition to her Treasury
functions, she continues to manage the insurance relationships and
processing as well as other administrative responsibilities.
Karen passed the CTP
exam last fall and met some of our members at a recent AFP class. She
liked the idea of networking with other people in the field and decided to
become a member.
She has 2 grown children (no
grandchildren yet) and resides with her husband in Altadena, just North of
Pasadena. Karen's hobbies include gardening, reading, crocheting and
second guessing the stock market - just for fun. |
Do You Have A New
Program Idea?
If you would like to see
a particular topic or speaker at one of our future luncheon meetings, please let
Morgyn Taylor, CTP (Fremont General Corp.) know about it at
mtaylor@fmt.com
