From the Corner Office
Welcome to the February edition of SCAFP News.
It is an exciting time for the Association - practitioner memberships are
on the rise, attendance levels at the monthly luncheons are up, we are
financially strong, and we have two outstanding education opportunities this
Spring. You can read more about the SunGard "Hot Site" tour (March 18th) and the
EXPO LA Symposium (May 12th & 13th) in this newsletter.
My theme for SCAFP this year is "everyone recruits . . . everyone serves." It is
this principle that is guiding my first two priorities as President: to increase
practitioner memberships, and to increase the number of members who volunteer to
serve the Association. You have a rewarding opportunity to participate with our
"Recruitment Challenge." I encourage you to refer a colleague to join the
Association and reap the rewards. You can find out more about the "Recruitment
Challenge" also in this newsletter.
It's not too early to begin thinking about next year in the life of the
Association. Both you and the Association will benefit by your volunteering to
serve as an officer or director or on one of our many committees. Every member
has gifts and talents to share with SCAFP. I encourage you to offer yours. To
get involved, simply contact Morgyn Taylor, President-Elect, Chuck Whitney,
Immediate Past President, or me. We welcome the opportunity to talk to you
about your role in the Association.
Lastly, a special thank you goes to Richard Bort for producing this newsletter.
I look forward to seeing you at the February 13th luncheon meeting.
Michael Hards, CTP
President

What
Will Your Organization Do In Case of Disaster? |
|
Take a tour of a business recovery facility with SCAFP members
Living and working in Southern California, we take for granted
the environment in which we live. The occasional news story of a wildfire or
earthquake has become commonplace in Southern California. What we seem to
forget, however, is how truly devastating these events can be. Earthquakes,
floods, fires and other natural and unnatural disasters can threaten not only
our personal well being but also pose a danger to our very important data on
which we rely to ensure the financial viability of the companies we work for.
In addition, events such as 9/11 pose an equally dangerous threat to the safety
of this valuable information. What would your organization do if all your
information were lost? How would you recover?
In the spirit of keeping our members informed, the SCAFP Education Committee,
chaired by Susan Bredbenner, CTP (SunGard Treasury Systems), has organized a
visit to SunGard Availability Services' business recovery center in Cypress.
If you attend this tour, you'll
learn about:
-
The basics of disaster recovery and business contingency
planning for your organization.
-
The recent legislation and
regulatory changes dictated by Sarbanes-Oxley, and how they affect business
continuity planning.
-
How other companies have
implemented disaster recovery programs and how important those programs have
proven to be.
SunGard is the
largest provider of data storage and disaster recovery services in the world,
besides being a leading provider of treasury workstations and institutional
financial systems.
Please join us on
Thursday, March 18 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the SunGard Availability Services
Center in Cypress, CA. Space is limited, so log on now to www.scafp.net
and click on the link to obtain further information and to sign up for the tour,
or call the Association's office at (818) 843-5660! |

EXPO
L.A. Symposium 2004 Coming May 12 & 13 |
|
Planning for the 24th
annual "EXPO L.A. Symposium 2004" is well underway by SCAFP's Major Events
Committee with the theme of "Broaden our Treasury Horizons." The event will be
held on May 12 &13, 2004 at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
That's where we hold our monthly meetings.
Led by its able chair, Chuck Beckert
(Bank of the West), the Committee is planning 24 breakout sessions on a wide
variety of treasury-related topics over the two full days, plus interesting
luncheon keynote speakers each day and a reception on opening evening.
If you hold the CCM, CTP, or AAP
credential,
EXPO LA Symposium 2004 has been approved for up to 12
recertification credits by the Association for Financial
Professionals (AFP).
The Committee is repeating the
extraordinarily popular bingo card feature introduced at last year's EXPO. The
winners, who become eligible for a drawing by visiting every sponsor's table,
will receive exciting and valuable prizes at the end of the second day.
Visit SCAFP's website,
www.scafp.net,
to review the preliminary program and arrange your calendar to attend this
important annual event. While at the website, you can register for the event
online and obtain the early-bird discount until April 16.
Also while you're at the website, we
hope you will notice the many sponsors that have already committed to support us
this year. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor of EXPO L.A. Symposium
2004, you will find the Sponsor's Prospectus at the website as well, or you may
contact Gene Mah (Marsh Risk & Insurance Services) at (213) 346-5186 or by
e-mail to
Gene.A.Mah@marsh.com.
So put it on your calendar now -

SCAFP Recruitment Challenge |
|
Our best salespeople are our
members! That's why we are calling on you! We're announcing our first ever
membership drive contest called "SCAFP Recruitment Challenge." The purpose of
the Challenge is to increase the overall membership of our organization and is
open to all of our current members.
A $50 American Express gift
certificate will be awarded to you for each qualified practitioner you refer who
becomes a new SCAFP member. The number of referral awards for any member is
unlimited.
A qualified referral is a
practitioner who has not been a member of SCAFP for the past year and who pays
the membership dues of $250 for 2004.
The Challenge begins NOW and will
end on May 31, 2004. Please have the person you refer note your name on the
application or inform the SCAFP Membership Chair of the person you have
referred. In addition to winning the $50 gift certificate, the practitioner
member and the non-practitioner member who refer the greatest number of new
qualified members will be announced at the June luncheon meeting.
Now remember, the qualified referral
must be a practitioner!
We encourage you to use the SCAFP
website, membership brochure, and SCAFP business cards that describe the
benefits of joining, in your recruitment efforts. (The Association office can
supply these to you.) In addition, you may extend an invitation to your referred
practitioner to attend one of our monthly luncheons as your "guest" for a fee of
$40.
If you have any questions regarding
the Recruitment Challenge, contact the Membership Chair, Tiffany Lemieux
(Fidelity Investments), at (310) 843-3326 or Amber in the Association Office at
(818) 843-5660. The success of this campaign requires the participation of every
existing member. Happy recruiting! |

SONY
Bets Their Cash and Wins! |
|
The annual holiday
luncheon in December was highlighted once again by the now nationally-famous
"You Bet Your Cash" game show. The show was emceed by the venerable Bill Luehrmann (Occidental Petroleum), who always can be counted on to excite the
crowd with trivial questions from "It's A Wonderful Life." (In what year was
this movie released?*) The competition among the players at eight tables was
fierce.
Proving that smaller
can be better, the under-sized Sony Pictures Entertainment team of four players
walked away with the grand prize, a basket of holiday cheer for each player,
when they answered correctly the question, "In what month and year did the Dow
Jones Industrials last (prior to December 12, 2003) hit the 10,000 level?
(Answer: May 2002) The Sony team was composed of Mark Celaya, Winston
Fan, Sunny Lee, and Sandra Ruckdaschel.
Big "Thank You's" go
to Bill Luehrmann for editing the questions (not to mention the answers!), and
to Janine Newell and Amber Ardizone, of the Association's office, for bringing
together the many elements that made this year's program more fun than ever!
Also, many of the questions were developed by SCAFP directors and assembled by
Michael Hards, CTP (JP Morgan).
Incidentally, "You
Bet Your Cash" has indeed become nationally famous. At each of the past three
annual AFP Regional Officers Meetings in Washington, D.C., our officers have
been asked by other regionals to share the format and questions with them. Ours
has been a winning formula that is now being emulated around the country.
* "It's A
Wonderful Life" was released in 1946 |
