SCAFP News January 2007

From the Corner Office

Happy New Year!

Dear fellow SCAFP members, the Board of Directors and I would like to wish you a very prosperous 2007.  As we begin this New Year, we hope that all of you have mailed in your annual membership renewals.  Your non-profit association survives on our two revenue sources.  The first being annual membership dues and the second is our annual Expo LA.  Please help us with our budgeting by renewing early.

Your dues enable us to put on timely monthly meetings with quality speakers.  We don't just want your money, we want YOU to attend as many monthly meetings as possible.  All speakers want to know how many members attend our monthly meetings, so your attendance is vital in our ability to attract quality speakers.

Please also mark your calendars for Expo LA on May 10th and 11th at the Pasadena Convention Center.  We are lining up some great sessions.  We look forward to your attendance.  Bring an associate and share the learning experience.  Earn CTP credits and network with your fellow Treasury professionals.

MAY 2007 BE A GREAT YEAR FOR YOU.

 EXPO L.A. Symposium 2007

This year's EXPO will be held at the Pasadena Conference Center.  Mark the dates on your calendar - May 10-11, 2007.

Why should you attend EXPO L.A. Symposium 2007?
EXPO L.A. Symposium 2007 takes place on a regional stage with a national cast of highly experienced experts. The Symposium features four tracks running concurrently over two days for a total of 26 different presentations. You are welcome to attend sessions on numerous topics, or just focus on a few that are of interest to you. EXPO L.A. Symposium 2007 is local and reasonably priced, which means that attending the event will be easy on your budget.

Why is EXPO L.A. Symposium 2007 such a good value?
EXPO L.A. Symposium 2007 is produced by the members of SCAFP. It is priced to be affordable for its members and the general public, especially compared to attending national conferences that incur additional expenses for travel and hotel accommodations. Five or more employees of the same firm, registering as a group, qualify for the Member Rate.

Register now! We encourage online registration, so just click here: Register on-line or go to www.scafp.net and click on EXPO L.A. Symposium 2007. Register five or more employees from your firm as a group and enjoy the Member Rate.

Sponsors! There are still sponsor opportunities available and you have several ways of signing up. Log onto www.scafp.net and download the sponsor prospectus. You may also contact Shannon Wexler at shannon.wexler@jpmorgan.com  to discuss current sponsor opportunities. Table Top displays and cyber-cafe will be centrally located between the luncheon sessions and breakout sessions.  We have the lower level of the conference building so everything will be centrally located.  Great opportunity throughout the event for visibility for your product or services.

Speakers! We have a few slots still open for speakers. Do not miss the opportunity to speak - submit your proposal today. Call for Breakout Session Proposals

YOU BET YOUR CASH TRIVIA GAME

Congratulations

A great time was had by all at the 19th Annual "You Bet Your Cash 2006" trivia game.  The competition was strong between the seven tables, and the "lightening" round where you can bet all or none of your cash for the final question determined the winners.  Each player at table six received a scrumptious Ghirardelli gift basket

Winners of the 19th Annual "You Bet Your Cash 2006" game:

Beth Anama

Luis Carrillo

Jose Duenes

Sylvia Grospe

Conrad Lopez

Mila Mata

Greg Melidonian

Tess Sarenas

We'd like to extend our gratitude to all of the sponsors of this year's meeting for donating some wonderful door prizes.  Winner of the Grand Door Prize, donated by Comerica Bank, with the Birthday closest to the December meeting Date:

Daniel Wong

Thank you so much to those who brought a new, unwrapped toy to our December 8, 2006 You Bet Your Cash meeting.  We collected 26 great toys that were delivered to Toys for Tots for distribution to disadvantaged children during the holiday season.  Our 2006 toy drive was our 3rd annual Toys for Tots collection.  When you think about it, You Bet Your Cash is the perfect meeting to collect toys for children in need:  we all walk away from the December meeting with at least a tote bag of gifts, so it's a way of passing along the holiday spirit of giving to those less fortunate than we are.  When you mark the December 14, 2007 You Bet Your Cash meeting in your calendars, please remember to make a note next to that entry that says 'bring a new toy for Toys for Tots.'  Thank you for making our 2006 Toys for Tots drive a success!

We were happy to welcome back our Master of Ceremonies for the past 18 years:

Bill Luehrmann from Occidental Petroleum, shown here with his wife Phyllis.

PERSONAL FINANCE CORNER

Start the year off right - did you know that you're entitled to receive a free copy of your credit report every year from each of the three credit bureaus?  Many people never or seldom even look at their credit report until they apply for a loan or credit card or have been denied one. It could then be too late - inaccurate or missing information could prevent you from getting the loan you want (with that great low rate!) or delay you when timing is of the essence, such as in the purchase of a new home. You could also be denied insurance or a job opportunity based on the lack of financial responsibility shown in your erroneous credit report.

Experts recommend that you obtain a credit report and review it every four months to help thwart identity theft - it's one of the easiest things you can do!

Call 877-322-8228 or visit the https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp website to request a free copy of your credit file disclosure from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion (or contact each one directly).  For a nominal charge, you'll also be able to retrieve your credit score.

Other simple things you can do to prevent identity theft:

  • Call the three major credit bureaus' toll-free line (888-567-8688) to opt out of pre-approved unsolicited credit and insurance offers

  • Create online access to your accounts so that someone else will not be able to do so

  • Always use complex passwords that are not easily guessed

  • Monitor online accounts weekly and check those paper statements for unexpected activity

  • Use cash or a credit card instead of a debit card since they do not provide your bank account information

  • Lock your mailbox

  • Do not use unsecured mailboxes to deposit outgoing mail

  • Shred sensitive documents

  • Don't provide your personal information to anyone soliciting it in an email or phone call

  • Leave your social security card and unneeded credit cards in a secure place (not in your wallet or handbag)

  • Keep your wallet or handbag in a protected location at work

  • When ordering new checks, pick them up in person - don't have them sent in the mail

  •  Close accounts that you no longer use

Federal Reserve Tour

The tour will cover the Cash operations areas along with a newly-installed lobby exhibit, "Fed Gallery: Your Central Bank in Focus," which uses interactive technology and vivid graphics to highlight the Federal Reserve's role in the American economy. Various displays focus on cash and check operations, bank supervision, and monetary policy. The gallery includes a "pachinko" style game in which the participant rates the safety and soundness of a particular financial institution, a money wheel that asks visitors to identify counterfeit notes; and a currency display featuring historic and rare notes.
