Take this Job and Love It!
George Bernard Shaw said, "A master in the art of living knows no sharp distinction between their work and their play, their labor and their leisure, their mind and their body, their education and their recreation .. . They simply pursue their vision of excellence through whatever they are doing and leave others to determine whether they are working or playing." Because we manufacture ourselves through our work, each time we make a choice on the job, we shape our identities, our inner feelings about who we are, our sense of self-worth, and our relationships with others. This program is about discovering the hidden truths about our life, and how we can move from simply surviving our work to mastering the art of living through our work.

Martha N. Bryan is a leading authority on the development of human potential and personal excellence.

With an education background in teaching, she has taught at both high school and college levels and has held positions in both government and private industry. Her work career expands from farm laborer and cafeteria helper to positions in staff support, sales, training and personnel administration. She has served in leadership positions for a number of organizations - chairman of college advisory boards, president of women's organizations, president of personnel administration organizations and president of a financial institution.
After 20 years in public sector administration, Martha resigned to start her own consulting firm. She has a wide range of consulting experiences -- working with CEOs, Presidents, Elected Officials, Directors, Managers, Administrators, Supervisors, Auditors, Engineers, Attorneys, Teachers as well as Line Staff. She has become a sought after speaker throughout the United States and Canada in the areas of Customer Excellence, Leadership, Communication, and Organization and Personal Excellence.

The 60 Mile Circle: Reconnecting our Neighborhoods to the Region
The "60-Mile Circle: Reconnecting our Neighborhoods to the Region" argues for a regional approach to key growth-related issues. Southern California faces enormous increases in trade and population over the twenty years, 2000-2020, which will create far-reaching challenges. The presentation surveys the expected growth and explores the implications for the region's quality of life and economic competitiveness. The presentation concludes with a description of the policy hurdles standing between Southern California and a prosperous, livable future.

Gregory Freeman is the Director of Policy Consulting for the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) and the California Economic Research Center (CERC). He conducts economic and public policy research for clients of the LAEDC, including both public agencies and private companies. Mr. Freeman’s primary areas of expertise are in economic impact analysis and trade and transportation infrastructure.

Mr. Freeman has conducted numerous economic impact studies on projects ranging from special events (such as the Oscars), to new hotels, development projects, and company expansions, to analyses of the ongoing operations of major institutions such the University of California, Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority. He is frequently the lead investigator on important economic impact projects, most recently for analyses of the economic impact of the Breeders’ Cup; the job, wage, and tax implications of planned operations of the new Home Depot Center in Carson; and a study of the implications of Wal-Mart’s entry into the Southern California grocery market.

Mr. Freeman is a frequent speaker on trade, population, and transportation trends in Southern California. He has co-authored several papers on major infrastructure for the Southern California Studies Center at the University of Southern California: The LAX Master Plan: Facing the Challenges of Community, Environmental and Regional Airport Planning, co-authored with Professor Steven P. Erie and Thomas Kim; Planning Airport Expansion: A Survey of Best Practices at Nine Leading International Airports, co-authored with Steven P. Erie and Harold Brackman; and Global High-Speed Rail Projects: Lessons for California, co-authored with Steven P. Erie and Harold Brackman.
